30-Year-Old Searches For His Biological Dad, And Then He Learns He's A World-Famous Singer

For nearly three decades, James Raymond had no idea who his biological father was. But that all changed when the man who had put him up for adoption in the 1960s decided to finally track down his long-lost son. And the guy in question just so happened to be one of the world’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. Naturally, James was stunned when he found out who his real dad was after all those years, but that was far from the end of their story.

A gifted musician

Funnily enough, James had already established himself as a gifted musician by the time he discovered the truth. Not only had he worked with soul diva Chaka Khan, but he’d also worked on a hit Nickelodeon show as its musical director. And James has since added to his impressive musical portfolio, too.

A busy career

More recently, James has collaborated with two of his musical idols, Donald Fagan and Michael McDonald. He also composed the score of a Special Olympics TV advertisement and served as backing musician for Warren Zevon. But no doubt James’ proudest career achievement came when he reconnected with his famous father.

Up for adoption

James had always known that he’d been put up for adoption in 1962. But he didn’t even attempt to try and track down his biological parents until he hit 30. James first reconnected with his mother, a musician named Celia Crawford Ferguson who’d emigrated Down Under, at his 1994 summer wedding.

True identity

It was only then that James learned about the identity of his father: it was one of the counter-culture movement’s most prominent singer-songwriters. But James didn’t immediately gravitate toward the rock legend. He was apparently worried that such efforts might be construed as an attempt to get ahead in his career.
